It all happens in the parrot

March 14, 2013

I feel it’s time I payed tribute to what’s fast becoming one of Carmarthen’s institutions: The parrot music bar in King Street.

If you’ve been to an exhibition in Carmarthen recently, there’s a fair chance that it was discussed here before it was put on. Also, the parrot has fast become the venue of choice for the parties that often happen after openings. Not only that, but the parrot hosts a fair number of cultural events in its own right. Events such as poetry slams and film nights sit alongside the more expected musical fixtures. Ukranian folk band Dark Patrick, for instance, were by all accounts fantastic- and their album is worth a listen. Alistair Roberts plays on the 24th, and if his album is anything to go by it’s going to be great. But there’s so much going on there. There are regular drum and bass nights, rock bands, ska bands and more, so there should be something to take your fancy.

Upstairs, there’s the tangled parrot record shop, run by Carmarthen Journal columnist the music man. There’s a pretty broad selection of stuff here, too. Downstairs, you can hang out on sofas around a mosaic table, take a seat at a table or sit at the bar.

There’s a nice, chilled atmosphere in the parrot that’s comfortable for families. The bar do soups, flatbreads, jacket potatoes and things. There’s usually a real ale on tap, if you’re into beer. There are cakes on the bar. Cakes. What’s more, it’s probably the only pub in town where you can have a serious conversation about the postmodern condition with a member of the bar staff without any expectation of getting chucked out.
